About PPMA |
The Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association (PPMA) currently represents more than 850 Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (or podiatrists) across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PPMA started in 1909 in order to stop an objectionable legislative bill proposed to regulate all phases of health care practice, which included a clause to eliminate the practice of chiropody. The profession had to come together and raise funds and obtain the legal advice to stop that bill. Their collective efforts proved successful and brought about a charter for a much needed state organization, the Chiropody Society of Pennsylvania, on November 1, 1909. Out of 325 men and women practicing chiropody in the Keystone State at that time, it was 42 practitioners who responded to the solicitation for funds to keep their profession alive in Pennsylvania. It still proves today, as PPMA just finished its 100th Anniversary last year, that there is and always has been strength in numbers. The PPMA is made up of 12 Divisions: Berks, Bucks-Montgomery, Central, Delaware, Erie/Northwestern, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh Valley, Luzerne/North Central, Philadelphia, South Central, and Western. These Divisions help the Association with representation at the Association’s annual business meeting or House of Delegates. Also, regular division meetings aid members in that specific area to network and to alert the Association about local problems or with suggestions on how the Association may better serve its membership. These Divisions are extensions of the Association in essence. Once a doctor joins PPMA, he or she automatically becomes a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association or APMA. About APMA |
Its parent organization is the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the premier professional organization representing the nation's podiatrists. APMA began in 1912 as the National Association of Chiropodists. However, it traces its roots to the New York Pedic Society, which began in 1895. APMA represents approximately 80 percent of the podiatrists in the country. Within APMA's umbrella of organizations are 53 component societies in states and other jurisdictions, as well as 22 affiliated and related societies. APMA's Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) is the body designated by the US Department of Education to accredit the nation's podiatric medical schools. In addition, the Council has the responsibility to accredit residency programs and continuing medical education programs. The Council recognizes certifying boards (such as the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics & Primary Podiatric Medicine) within podiatric medicine that meet its standards. APMA provides foot health information to the public in a number of ways, including through its toll free number, 1-800-FOOTCARE. There are more than three dozen different foot health brochures available at no charge. APMA also has an Internet Web site to provide information to the public (www.apma.org).
